Eli siis, joulu oli yks unohtumattomimmista hetkistä Amerikassa - toivottavasti teillä kaikilla oli hyvä joulu myös!
Christmas was here... and now it's gone! I had an awesome Christmas - it was for sure different than any Christmas I've ever had, there were no traditional Finnish Christmas foods, sauna, Christmas Eve's waiting of presents, and I also didn't have my own family, but I did enjoy it a lot. Christmas was anything but traditional also because it was mainly focused on Jesus instead of Santa. My host family is pretty religious so we, for example, read the Christmas Story from the Bible. Also the house was packed with people on Christmas Eve - there were like fifty people here! So, Christmas was very very different, but I saw it as an amazing opportunity: it was totally amazing to experience a new, completely different Christmas!
On Christmas Eve we went caroling. It was pretty fun, even though I didn't know the songs in English. After that we came home and started to eat dinner. It wasn't very "christmasy", we had salad and dips, apple cider, soups and whatnot. For dessert we had chocolate and pepper mint! In the evening we read the Christmas Story and sang religous Christmas song like Holy Night, Silent Night and after this we opened our Christmas Eve's presents. I got pajama pants (my host mom said that she had to go through all of the stores in Spokane to find me a wild enough pair of pants!). For the rest of the night we hang out with the relatives, played games, and finally went to bed around midnight.
On the morning of Christmas Day my younger host siblings woke me up around seven. We had Christmas boots instead of Christmas socks, and they were filled with candy. For a while we ate our candy and waited that my host parents, Heather and Mark, would wake up. Finally we got to go to the living room, and there was a huge pile of presents under the Christmas tree. I got a lot more presents then I had ever even dreamed, a part from my host family and a part from my real family from Finland.
I got jewellery, Moomin Reinos, a huge bowl of Cheetoes (Lacy and I were in Spokane one day and I wanted them SO bad, so she decided to buy it as a present for me), a water bottle, clothes, candy from Finland, a rice bag (to warm up my feet and to the school bus during cold winter mornings!), and a ton of other stuff too.
The biggest present was a complete surprise: my mom and Heather talked about this on Facebook: I'm going to Disneyland in February with my host family!! My host family asked my what would the one thing, no matter what the cost, that I'd like to do in America, and I said that I'd like to go to Disneyworld or Disneyland, but I had no idea that we'd really do it! I'm so excited - thank you mama! :)
So, this Christmas has most definitely been one of the most unforgetable moments - I hope you all had a great Christmas, too!
